THE OROPESA NAME
The name of our firm is unusual, and we are often asked to explain it’s origin.
During the First World War the sea mine became a scourge of shipping with 250,000 laid through the coasts of Europe. The Second World War saw more shipping lost to sea mines than submarine, surface vessel and aircraft attack combined.
The intent of this style of warfare is to deny access to ports and sea-lanes, disrupt shipping, deliver economic restriction and devastate the free flow of trade by sea.
To combat these unseen hazards, an innovative and courageous trawler the Oropesa, towed a single wire fitted with cutters arranged to sever the moorings of buoyant mines tethered to the seabed. Once exposed by the Oropesa Sweep the threat was removed by direct and decisive action. From this humble beginning the first form of mine warfare was born. As the threat has evolved, so to has the counter to it, meeting and matching the adversary at each and every step.
In homage to our company founder’s history, and in keeping with the ethos of removing hazards to shipping and maintaining safe maritime trade, this company was named after the first innovation of its kind – Oropesa.
Like this formative solution to safe shipping, Oropesa Port Management prides itself on providing innovation and evolution to continually explore all options and opportunities in furthering port operations and management.
Business is conflict. It sees the rise and fall of economic interests supporting specific, regional, national and global outcomes and can only be balanced by prudent operations and considered management.
Strategic vision coupled with Industry Leading Operational Capability is required to meet the needs of our clients – and that is what we deliver.
- The ability to Identify Hazards others cannot,
- The foresight to look beyond the threat and see the solution,
- The Vision to see what lies beyond the near horizon,
- The Tenacity to persevere where others falter.
These are the driving principles that Oropesa values.
